SUMMARY:RECOGNISING AND UNDERSTANDING THE 'QUIET' CHILD OR THOSE WHO HAVE SELECTIVE MUTISM
DESCRIPTION:This workshop intended to help parents/carers and educators understand and support children who are perceived as quiet or have Selective Mutism. \nSelective Mutism is a childhood anxiety disorder that is defined by consistent failure to speak in social situations in which there is an expectation for speaking\, despite speaking in other situations. Children are often unable to speak in social situations like school classrooms or the playground\, and with certain people\, such as their teacher\, grandparents or peers. \nAims of the session- \nTo provide increased knowledge and understanding of selective mutism including: \nWhat is selective Mutism. \nThe causes and definitions of Selective Mutism. \nAssessment and diagnosis of selective mutism. \nDifferential diagnosis of a quiet child/reluctant talker and SM \nEffective strategies and techniques to support young people with selective mutism (including the sliding in technique) \nHow to create a supportive environment. \n  \nAt the end of the session delegates should feel empowered and confident in making tangible steps in supporting the child.
